Clean energy employs 64,310, report says
Sector represents 1.5 percent of the state’s entire workforce
A new report by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center finds that the Massachusetts clean energy sector has 4,909 firms employing 64,310 workers, or 1.5 percent of all employment in the state. The report says the sector experienced a 6.7 percent growth rate during the period from July 2010 to July 2011, while the overall growth rate among all Massachusetts industries was just 1 percent. The breakdown by sector was 20,709 employees in installation, 18,686 in sales and distribution, 11,019 in research and development, 462 in manufacturing and assembly, and 5,722 in other areas. Officials said the report is unusual in that it did not just focus on recognized clean energy employers but sought to include firms outside the sector that were potentially related to clean energy. The report identified a clean energy worker as someone who spends “at least a portion of their time supporting the clean energy aspects of their business.” A listing of the clean energy employers was not included in the report.
