Budget cuts could close 10-15 courthouses

Top officials of the Massachusetts Trial Court say they would have to close 10 to 15 courthouses and lay off hundreds of employees if the House’s budget proposal is enacted. The House budget calls for court funding of $529.1 million, a reduction of $30 million from current levels.

Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, in a statement, said the court has reduced its overall workforce by 659 employees since fiscal 2009 and closed three courthouses.

“We are gravely concerned about our ability to deliver justice,” she said.
