MBTA bus catches fire in Jamaica Plain

Fire extinguished by Fire Department at Arborway facility

AN OUT-OF-SERVICE bus returning to the Arborway facility in Jamaica Plain caught fire on Thursday and the Boston Fire Department had to be called in to extinguish the blaze.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the fire was in the vehicle’s “rear compartment.” He said MBTA personnel tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire and two employees were transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

Pesaturo said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Darragh Murphy, who took a picture of the bus on fire, on Twitter applauded the driver for driving the on-fire vehicle into the Arborway facility and for the Boston Fire Department for responding quickly.

The MBTA has faced a series of safety incidents that have promoted a Federal Transit Administration review of its subway procedures but the bus operations are not under investigation.
